Many of you already know but in case you don't....just recieved my new Vintage Guitar mag in the mail and there is a good article on bursts as well as a side bar on the Minesotta burst. Great glossy cover with the Minessota Burst on it. For those interested in this $178k burst here are some pix. stunning example of a clean beautiful burst.

Is that the one you were going to get, Karl? And why do they call it a "Minnesota" burst?

Gibson didn't have any mfg plants there that I'm aware of. It also doesn't appear to be shaped like Minnesota, though my eyes aren't what they used to be and I may need a closer look...

(just kidding)

what issue is it? I just went out and got the August issue and don't see anything like that in there yet...better look harder. Also, what makes the thing about twice the price as most other bursts? the condition? thanks.

It's the Sept issue. May not be on the stands yet. Subscribers usually get the mags first. What makes this twice as much. Well from the seller the following was the criteria for which to get that much: absolutely beautiful example of flame, rivals ifnot surpasses the Brockburst. Absolutely virgin untouched original. When I aske to remove the covers to see if it was white, black or zebra the owner did not want to because the guitar had never had a screw turned on it. It belonged to an old man that was still doing Polkas (yes I know we have all heard that story before but in this case it was confirmable). Although the selling price was not disclosed a anonomys European buyer purchased it. When I was looking at the guitar there was a $150k Japanese offer and Bruce Barnes the owner would accept anything over $180. So the conclusion was that it sold for that as it was not on the market for very long.

Zhang,
I was never in the position to get the guitar. I have a budget of half that and anything over that would bring sure death from my wife. At that time I would have had to raise the capital quickly and the only way I would have been able to that would have been to liquidate a lot of stuff. I was not willing to do that even though the guitar was probably worth that.

Minnesota burst

Not for nothing Karl, and I'm sure you didn't mean it, but go back and read your last post. Doesn't listing the family's assets sound just a little pretentious?

:lolspin yeah SGharry, I bet it's pretty rough. I would've gotten rid of the Porsche anyway, maintaining, and finding someone around here that'll fix the thing. ahhhh, the hardships of the wealthy ;)

Can a guitar REALLY be worth that much ? Money can't buy love or brains but it can make life fun as hell.

I saw that Minnesota Burst the day the guy came to get it. Bruce showed it to me. It was in OK shape, not mint, it had considerable neck finish wear. Really nice top. From what I heard, a French guy bought it and 'flipped' it, so God knows what it ended up selling for in the end. Bruce said he took a lot of flak from other dealers about that guitar, he seemed relieved to get rid of it.

Meanwhile, the octogenerian polka player that owned that guitar has been getting off on his new rio grande-equipped epiphone....
