• THIS IS THE 25th ANNIVERSARY YEAR FOR THE LES PAUL FORUM! PLEASE CELEBRATE WITH US AND SUPPORT US WITH A DONATION TO KEEP US GOING! We've made a large financial investment to convert the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and recently moved to a new hosting platform. We also have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!
  • WE HAVE MOVED THE LES PAUL FORUM TO A NEW HOSTING PROVIDER! Let us know how it is going! Many thanks, Mike Slubowski, Admin
  • Please support our Les Paul Forum Sponsors with your business - Gary's Classic Guitars, Wildwood Guitars, Chicago Music Exchange, Reverb.com, Throbak.com and True Vintage Guitar. From personal experience doing business with all of them, they are first class organizations. Thank you!

Do we like 1974 Les Paul Customs?

for metal or harder rock - are the stock '74 [era] pickups good/strong enough to cut, and still let my amps [early JCM, Fortin, Engl, Mesa Rev.F] do the heavy lifting ? prefer to let the amps lift vs. overwound p/u's.

gotta say that 70's tobacco look is the look, even over black/ebony - which is my #1 stage unit ['01 R68 custom authentic w/ throbaks]. old wood good.

Yep. They are probably T- tops. Good to go.

my real revelation with getting a '74 20th Anniversary is how severe the neck taper is. It's almost 335-esque on the lower frets where you want to be able to wrap your thumb and fingers around the fretboard, and it tapers really severely to a relatively big chunk of wood once you're up the dusty end and need some something solid to dig into. Totally beats the neck on my old '93 standard.

My 73. Probably the main reason I have one was my Al DiMeola hero worship. LOL! I hated the witch hat knobs, they are in the case pocket and I replaced them with dome knobs.
