• THIS IS THE 25th ANNIVERSARY YEAR FOR THE LES PAUL FORUM! PLEASE CELEBRATE WITH US AND SUPPORT US WITH A DONATION TO KEEP US GOING! We've made a large financial investment to convert the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and now have to move to a new host. We also have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!
  • WE ARE MOVING THE LES PAUL FORUM TO A NEW HOSTING PROVIDER OVER THE NEXT 5-10 DAYS. We will experience downtime during that period. Please be patient and have confidence that we will return! Many thanks, Mike Slubowski, Admin

With a custom color guitar, nothing makes me more uncomfortable than some kind of strangeness with the serial number. A stamped serial number on a dark Gibson finish should be yellowish. On this one a yellowish color is painted over the darker stamped numbers underneath.

But if that wasn't enough to make you go hmmm, just look in detail at the photos. You can see cherry red color still there in some of the screw holes and under some of the paint chips. I know mahogany is a reddish wood, but the more I look, the more cherry I see.

Did they use BB Caps in '60 ? Last two digits on the pot 53 ?

Rare or not, you could buy a nice Cherry D/C and '56 S/C for that price......... I'd be happy with that. The black genuine or not just looks like a refin to me.

Calm down fellas, our very own TW59 saw it at Dallas, as did Dave Hinson who had his 61 at the show for comparison, Terry Mueller looked at it, Jay Rosen, and a whole host of others, and all said it looked legit.

Mike Long is the seller, he's one of the good guys. Killer guitar! :dude:

Freaky.
It's beyond my experience to say factory original or not.
I'll defer to the experts.

The blackburst was black painted over sunburst, why is it not plausible this is the same scenario? I guess the hard part is proving it without an original receipt stating that it was black to the original owner?

pretty cool. I still like Joe Perry's single cut black special more though :dude:.

I'm thinking my refin '56 Special might need to become a black refin now....

Sweet guitar. It looks to me like they may have at least red pore filled or sprayed on top a red guitar. Either way If all those guys said its legit, its legit. Cool to see the sunburst and two black DC jrs turn up in one show.:dude:

This guitar won't hang around long. You watch. And if you want one of the two Dave has, you'll need $25k. Custom colour black Gibsons are ultra rare, I sold a factory black ES-330 for similar money and I know of only 4 others, Keith has one, Bernard Butler has one, Pierre DeBeauport has two, one with gold hardware. This is one of only 3 known black Juniors, and, IMO way way more cooler than the sunburst that showed up last weekend.

Yes, several of us examined it, and I know Mike looked even deeper when he had time.
He and I talked about the serial number. I think it is very unusual, but I also feel it is legit, and will continue to until shown differently.
I believe it was a walk in at the show, and I think Mike made a great buy.
And, Mike is a really nice guy! :dude:

So what's up with the serial number?

We can all speculate about how it ended up looking like that, including both schools of thought [bogus or legitimate].

My best guess so far .... it was numbered in black and then highlighted with yellow [or white, which yellowed].
