Hello!

I have a 59 VOS 60th anniversary Les Paul and its 'Carmelita' neck was the best neck I'd ever played.

Until I got my 56 Chunky "C" Shape neck recently. I have finally found the perfect size for my hands. And the guitar is easily the best I've played. It really vibrates in the hand, comes alive. Significantly more than others.

So my question is this: is this "one of those" guitars that just happens to meld together in a special way? Or is this typical of the chunky neck size? In other words, if I get another LP with buckers and the chunky neck will it feel similarly buzzing? I'm thinking I might sell the Carmelita one and go all chunky if so!

I think it is the wood in the neck more than anything, BUT

the units I have with huge necks do feel more "alive" to me.

2013-2015 R4-R7's are a good place to start. They seemed to be bigger on many for those years.

It's the earlier reissue yeas with the chunk or beefy, and as @renderit states earlier years. I've heard Gibson has 'refine' them in recent years.

R6 more U shoulder-y, R7 (at least mine and others I've experience) have a Soft-V but still pretty deep.

Nothing wrong seeking out earlier years, as well but post-2013 have the spec changes, post-2016 will have "True Historic" changes as well. YMMV.

Ok thanks! My R9 is 2019 and the Goldtop R6 I just got is 2024. Nothing wrong with the R9; it was my fave until 4 weeks ago :D

But that VOS R6 just changed the game.

I took it out on stage last week and it was great. But the P90s did buzz a lot. So I was thinking of getting the R7 Goldtop with the PAFs for a quieter time, but still with the Chunky C.

Fat necks are comfortable for me, slimmer necks are bearable but that's it eg I'd never go for a .800" at the 1st .950" is where I'm at, fills the left hand.

My 2007 R6 has a big fat neck and it resonates like you describe. Coincidence?

Nice one! I got the 57 with chunky c neck and it does feel as alive as the 56. Seems that the neck is the thing!
