Guys, take a look at this '61 SG Junior that's being offered to me...

I have a PRS for sale and someone is offering his SG Junior as partial trade + cash. I don't know much about SG Juniors, but own a '58 doublecut Junior that I absolutely love. This SG Junior has Grovers and a repaired cracked headstock (split along the "wing" of the headstock by the G-string tuner, repaired with dowels on side). all other parts are original and case is original.

It's in road warrior shape, but I'm told it plays and sounds very good. I'm hoping to get your opinions on 1) Price/Value and 2) Any observations to note after looking at these pics...

Wish I could help you more on your questions, but I am not an expert on SG's. I am sure someone will chime in!

On a side note, must be a pretty early SG to have that low a serial number!

I wonder if the Grovers might increase any "neck-divey-ness" it may or may not have. Might be wise to switch back to Klusons if it exhibits any issues. Seriously cool guitar.

It has a crack at the jack socket, not unusual on SGs. Pity about the dowels in the headstock. Obviously not a pro repair, if wood filler was used. :bigal No pics of the heel, but that's not usually such a problem on Juniors.

Not sure of its monetary value given the issues, but still, that or a PRS is a no brainer. I'd have the headstock repaired properly and switch back to Klusons.

Just a wild ass guess, if the heel is undamaged, $2500 - $3000 tops. As far as headstock breaks go, that is not a bad one.

To me, that's a thousand dollar guitar. I see another crack line on the headstock too, behind the nut.

FWIW, I recently bought a '62 with no damage or issues in that range. It was purchased from a long time forum member. If the owner is valuing it in that range with the headstock repair, although I'm far from an expert, I'd consider it too high.

There's no way to know for sure whether that headstock repair was really done with dowels, or with screws, and then covered up with wood filler (or Bondo). Only a re-do (or X-Ray) would be able to determine this.

That's also an early '62, as '61 serial numbers ended around 42000+.

Thank you everyone. I'll correspond with the owner, but given what you all have said, I should pass on this guitar. It looks like too many issues that would translate into potential headaches for me down the road if I wanted to sell it. I'll get back with the seller and tell him about the serial number being a '62, so he can be more accurate with his listing. I appreciate the input from you all!

Someone earlier mentioned what looks like a second possible headstock crack behind the nut. I agree, but would need to see it in hand to be sure. That said, there is at least one headstock break with a less than stellar repair, damage at the input jack, it's been Grovered, and no heel pics. Also no cavity shots to verify electronics are original.

If I really like how it played/felt/sounded I'd top out at $1,500 personally. It's totally subjective though as it's hard to put a value on a 3 legged dog.

I just posted a pic of the heel, which looks in-tact. That being said, I'll communicate with the owner regarding the other points raised here. Thanks, everyone.

I have a '63 SG Jr with a repaired wing (no dowel - just glued), Grovered, case, no other breaks and all other hardware original. Huge neck. I paid $1700 shipped. The thing is a monster through my /13 BTR23.

I just picked up the subject guitar from the shipper today, I've been out of town all week. Got about an hour playing it. Crazy sweet guitar and solid as a rock. I love it!:hank
