Anyone know the story or history of Knopflers 58? Clearly one of the nicest sounding guitar on the planet!
It's my dream guitar.
Here's a recent video which shows it off really nice. An old Dire Straits tune that he brought back for this tour (not in Sweden though...) :
:salude
I believe Mark purchased it from Gary Winterflood in 1995 along with a very good condition 1959 around the same time. You would have to ask Gary or one of our resident Burst Gurus for more background info for it's pre MK years.
Here are a couple of pictures I took at the RAH back in 2005. You can see the top has faded a bit in the last decade.

And here is the '59. I don't think he takes this one out these days, preferring to use an R9 instead now.

Kiler Player & Killer Burst
This '58 has to be one of my all time favourite Bursts.
Mark has some serious Vintage Gear in his arsenal :dude::salude

Is the '59 the Money for Nothing guitar? I thought I read that most of that album was on a 'Burst, when he moved off the Strat for a while.
Is the '59 the Money for Nothing guitar?
The Money For Nothing guitar was a 1983 Les Paul Standard that Mark purchased from Rudy Pensa in NYC in 1984. He used this live too along with an '85 Standard before using the Pensa Suhr that John Suhr built for him when he worked for Rudy from about 87-88 onwards.
The '58 and '59 Bursts were not purchased until 1995. Mark still uses the '58 for every single show. In fact he has used it on everything he has done for the last 20 years so I would say it's his favourite. The best example of it is to get the Shangri La album, it's all over that, as well as the Trawler mans Song EP.
Not sure when he stopped taking the '59 on the road, I last saw it out in 2005. It spends most of it's time now at British Grove Studios and Mark still records with it I believe.
