• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I read with interest the endless debates on the net about top wrapping strings on a Les Paul so I decided to give it a try. My Les Paul Custom is a late 70's model and needed the tailpiece quite high for strings to clear the back of the bridge which was uncomfortable to play. The acoustic tone was never as good as my early 70's SG which has the tailpiece very close to the body.
I top wrapped my Les Paul as in below photo and I must say it does sound better. More ring.
I haven't noticed any more elasticity in the strings but then again the break angle over the bridge wasn't large anyway. More sustain???...I'm not sure but I love the way I can palm mute so much easier and strings sound more vibrant. That's my two cents/penneth's worth anyway. :) I kinda like the quirky look as well.

I feel the same way with regards to the palm part. My hand always feels trapped when I play a through-strung.
