THIS IS THE 25th ANNIVERSARY YEAR FOR THE LES PAUL FORUM! PLEASE CELEBRATE WITH US AND SUPPORT US WITH A DONATION TO KEEP US GOING!
We've made a large financial investment to convert the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and recently moved to a new hosting platform. We also have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!
Please support our Les Paul Forum Sponsors with your business - Gary's Classic Guitars, Wildwood Guitars, Chicago Music Exchange, Reverb.com, Throbak.com and True Vintage Guitar. From personal experience doing business with all of them, they are first class organizations. Thank you!
The Goldtop is going to have more of an upper mid bite to the sound, due to the maple top.
I used to have a '57 LP Junior, and I still have a '54 Goldtop, and the Junior was a screamer! The Goldtop is a little more refined and elegant. I'd lean to the Junior for straight-ahead hard rock, and more to the Goldtop for Bluesy rock. Just MY opinion tho...
Either one will get you a very cool P90 vibe happening, but they really are different.
Rogue, I fully agree with the above posts but i would add that how different the two guitars are depends on your experience? Since you have never played either I don't think tone should be your primary consideration. Both guitars sound great and are very similiar to each other in the broad spectrum of guitar tones. Make your choice based on feel, visual appeal and playability preference. There are far more differences in these areas between these two guitars than in tone to someone who is not familiar with either. I have both guitars and use them often. You really can't go wrong with either one. :60burst
