So to the owners of the flaking ML's, what are you going to do? Sell it? Have it refinished? Or play it until the point you probably need to get it refinished? I think if you love the way a guitar plays and feels, maybe the last option is best, but I don't know. I know someone mentioned or asked if you cut shoot a coat of finish on it to stop or slow down the flaking, but would that actually work?? If the paint hasn't adhered to the wood, would it still flake off with another coat of finish on top? I'm asking because I really don' know.
Whatever you do don't spray a coat over it, sure disaster.

It would be out the door if it were mine. To many great guitars out there to keep a headache.

It you must keep it imo it would be off to Starr Guitars or Historic Makeovers.

Is there a time span on this happening or is it a defect that shows up rather quick after the guitar was built? I am asking because my ML is only from late 2023(OCT) and if this defect can show up say
3-4 years later that would really suck!😡 as of right now these is zero flaking or chipping. Had I been aware of this defect I would have just went with a VOS and played it safe,

The fact that Gibson won't refinish the ones that are flaking tells me they don't know how long it takes before they flake.

It's easier to replace the guitar than refinish hundreds of guitars if they do start to flake.

We had the whole roasted top brainwave for aging acoustics. That was a gamble too. Seems to have worked out. But the Murphy gamble has not, IMO. Maybe the razor blades worked if you wanted that aesthetic, but the freeze thing with the new lacquer formula is letting them down.

The whole point of ML is to not refinish the guitar and let it run it's course . Worst case scenario it all falls off? Unlikely.. Heavy Aged is the worst you will get if it does happen.. All good you got it cheap. No problems with mine..

I've had 4 MLs (including a new one), and haven't had an issue with any of them, even when played on sweaty outdoor gigs.

Funny that, I got flamed here for mentioning WD40 on pots but sweat apparently is not flame worthy or even AI ridiculed..You'd swear I could be drawn and quartered for the mere mention. Ask Angus how many pot changes he's made due to sweat? Not even mentioning Pickups or wiring.

I feel sorry for whomever ends up with these instruments 50 yrs from now and struggles to understand why such a crap fad finish was applied to such a beautiful guitar.........

Probably the same as the originals 50 years later, refinished / repainted or stripped, broken necks , refrets swapped out circuitry etc ... except the real ones were cheap..

Isn't the point of ML to simulate 50 years of play wear? Probably the same as the originals 50 years later, refinished / repainted or stripped, broken necks , refrets swapped out circuitry and hardware etc ... except the real ones were cheap..cutoutside.jpg

Huh? Why would we ridicule sweating?
