I have been looking for years for something like this, but it was either a heavy custom, or it had a wiggle stick, or it had 3 pickups, etc. Suddenly this guitar appeared as part of a special dealer run. (A few dealers have these now.)

It's a '58 Standard (with a maple top, just like a burst), but in Ebony...front and back, with cream plastic.

8 1/4 lbs. Ultra-light aging. (More like it's just scuffed, with minimal checking.)
'59-ish neck profile with narrow frets.
Great set of custom buckers (7.8k-ish)

I've had a lot of historics over the years, and this one might be the best built of all of them.

I love the look. Very much like my benchmark '54 Oxblood. Also very low output Custombuckers. They're the best sounding modern humbuckers I've heard from Gibson.

Congrats!

Congrats!

Would you mind sharing the year and neck profile terminology as specified by the dealer (Chunky-D, Chunk-C, 50s Rounded Medium)?

You are giving me serious GAS! Doesn't help I was persusing this one at TMZ... I know, a Custom but close.

The full list of specs:

  • Mahogany single-cutaway body with plain maple top and cream binding
  • Mahogany neck in 1950s Chunky D-Shape profile
  • 9mm one-piece rosewood fingerboard
  • Jescar FW50078 Historic Narrow Tall fret wire
  • Aged celluloid trapezoid fret inlays
  • Nylon Reissue nut with Kluson Deluxe tuning machines
  • Nickel-plated aged '59 Historic Reissue No-Wire notched ABR-1 bridge
  • Nickel-played aged aluminum Stop Bar tailpiece
  • Aged Custombucker unpotted humbucking pickups
  • Gibson Custom Shop Murphy Lab Ultra Light Aged finish treatment
  • Gibson hardshell case included

I don't care what it says about the neck shape....it feels like what I had on the last few '59s. Maybe that's what "chunky-D" means.

Yeah, Gibbo Gone Wild on recent nomenclature for neck profiles. I'd love for them to provide more than 1 & 12 fret measurements with some accurate 3D frames.

Thanks... Enjoy!

What dealer? Willcutt had a few like that, can’t recall if they were 57’s or 58’s. I was very tempted.

This limited run does not. In the past, there were versions like this with gold knobs.

How are you getting along with the Narrow Tall frets?

Any 'tasting' notes i.e. comparing to the previous standard-issue Medium Jumbo (on older Historic Reissues)?

No problems at all. They are not too tall to be railroad-like, but still tall enough to bend easily. Compared to the small frets on my Murphy V, they are noticeably bigger.

I don’t need to see ebony Les Pauls. Or hear there are ebony R8’s
now.
Maybe a 9lb+/- VOS

Nice guitar how does it compare to Danger's tone?

Similar. Clear and bright without being harsh. Great middle tone.
Probably why I liked it...it's what I want to hear in an LP.

Neck and fret work are very different. DB has wide frets and a fatter neck and it more complex on the high end.
