I was able to purchase this 2022 ML R4 from another forum member. I drove out to him, got to put it through the paces, and it's a real winner. It was very important to me to find one that I could play first. No evidence of any of the finishing/flaking issues. It plays and sounds like a beast. I've had an R4 on my list for literally years and years. Very happy with this one!

Wow! what an awesome guitar, congrats!

My R4 quelled my desire to buy another Tele... it is the definition of the 'Tele on steroids' cliche.
I hope that you also find the same sonic character in your new guitar, because if you do, I doubt that you will ever find a more enjoyable guitar to play.

Thanks everyone!

Now that I've spent a week with it, I've had ample time to dial it in, with various amps and cabinets. At first (per another post I made), I thought the neck pickup was too bassy, but that was user error and had to do with my cab and EQ settings.

Now that I've got my amps dialed in properly, this guitar is just glorious. It has a very pronounced honk and mid-forward presentation. I just love it. Sounds like "Get Your Wings." In addition, this particular R4 does not have the baseball bat neck I've experienced with older R4s I've played. This one is much closer to my R9. Still thicker than the R9, but not night/day. It's not a featherweight, either. I believe close to 9 lbs, but I've never really cared about weight. It's the least important thing to me, as I focus on feel, set up, and especially tone.
