Hiya, just got my new naturalburst explorer today (schwing =-)..

I like the 496 in the neck, but the 500 in the bridge is a little too...mmm brittle for me.

I have a SD Custom Custom & an SD '59 layin around. Has anyone put either of those guys in an explorer? Thoughts? Lookin for warmer tone & not necessarily super high output.

Thanks!

I have a 500T in my PRS right now, and I have it cranked down a ways to soften up it's bite a bit. I also don't have any tone control whatsoever, so that will change it a bit, too.

I think the CC might be a bit muddy in an Explorer. I've got a '59 in the neck & JB in the bridge. Absolutely awesome combo. Easily covers blooze to metal.

First thing, the stock 300K volume pots really suck for a hot ceramic pickup, switching to at least 500K would help alot in making it less muddy. The other thing like snags said, if you don't ever use the tone pot, disconnecting the little waffer cap will kill off the tone pot and it's shit loading effect. Doing that alone will help the pickup breath alot better. The 500T is a cool pickup, but gibson likes to put a cork in it's ass and then sends it off to an all you can eat buffet.:)spin

Thanks guys!

I'm no guitar surgeon, what's a good way to bypass the tone pot or something (so the mod is reversible if needed)?

I do also have a bridge Duncan JD lyin around also..too bad my '59 is a bridge version...hmm wonder what it would sound like in the neck position...

Just clip the tone cap at one end. That takes the pot out of hte circuit. Leave enough to resolder it later if you want to undo it.
