Pickup Swap for 2000 LP Classic - Recommendations?

Hello all - new member/first post, so please bear with me!:)

I have been playing off & on for quite a few decades, almost exclusively with Fender SC guitars.....and a few Gretsches. Back in 2000 I bought a new Honeyburst Les Paul Classic but used it very little. Like I said, Fenders were always more familiar and I just didn't care for humbuckers I guess so the LP has been in its case, essentially forgotten for years.

That all changed recently when I purchased a new Gibson ES-335. I absolutely love that guitar - it is flawless and really inspires me to play.....and I have developed a new appreciation for Gibson. I'm finding way more sounds than I ever thought possible from a 2 Humbucker guitar!

Back to my 2000 Les Paul Classic.......
It really is a beautiful instrument, in new condition and like my 335, flawless construction. My research indicates that the LP Classic from this era is generally well-regarded in terms of materials and construction. It has the stock 496R and 500T high output ceramic pickups and I think those pickups are just not my thing and are why I lost interest in the LP. Having said all this, I would like to change out the pickups to something more traditional. I play mostly clean or cleanish/edge of breakup. Often play thru my vintage SFSR or SFDR , and sometimes through 57 Custom tweed champ. Since I just play at home now the other amp(s) I use frequently are a pair of Vox Pathfinder 15R's. Although the latter may seem like an unlikely choice (and its ok to laugh), I actually like them quite a bit - especially in stereo!

Anyway, I have read a LOT about pickup choices and watched many videos but still don't know what to try. At this point, I only want to change the pickups and keep the existing pots (300k vol & 500k tone I believe) and circuitry. I want pickups that have clarity, sensitivity to picking dynamics, and NOT dark or harsh. For reference, I really like the calibrated T Type pickups in my 335. They have a wide tonal range for me , from plenty bright to plenty jazzy via tone controls.

I originally considered installing Gibson 57 Classic neck and 57 Classic+ bridge, but concerned they might be too dark with my stock pots. Same with Seth Lover styles. Maybe that's not correct though. Have also thought Duncan 59s might be a good choice - played a Heritage H-535 with those and thought they sounded pretty good but have no idea what value pots were in it. What do all the experts and more experienced LP folks think would be a good choice for my LP Classic?

Thanks for reading - I really appreciate any thoughts, suggestions, guidance etc. you can offer!

I have a Classic bought new in 2000 (Avatar). One of Gibsons quality guitars from that era. I replaced the stock, pickups with Duncan ‘59's, which are just o.k.. Neck pickup always a little overpowering with lows. After 12 years, I decided on Seth's (Duncan again). They do the job and will remain. Neck is clear in all the frequencies and the bridge when adjusted for height is a good Rock pickup (maybe not Metal oriented). My neck pup measures 7.2k and the bridge 8.2k, and A2 magnet based, so they are right in the range they need to be, if you're keeping score. Pots are 300ohm for neck and 450ohm at bridge. Orange drop caps replace the stock disk originals. I had the guitar shielded in a “Farraday cage wiring job that is reversible. I still have the ‘59's and stock pickups.

Great feedback, Classicplayer - thanks! Did you use the same pots and caps for both sets of Duncan pickups?

I had tthe Orange Drop caps installed and in place for 6 of 12 years with the 59's and the last 7 or 8 years with the Seths. Neck pots are orignal and I replace the bridge tone pot at the beginning of the '59's and it is 550 ohms not 450ohms.

I use the 2000 Classic with an Orange Dark Terror 7/15 watt amp. Just one delay in the loop and get the grit from the amp alone. I set the amp for Classic Rock tones from the bridge and middle switch positions and cleaner tones from the neck when rolling its volume off a bit.

I have a set of Duncan Bonamassa 59 PAF’s and they are wonderful. My buddy put a set of Duncan Pearly Gates in his ‘68 LPC. I believe Duncan’s are worth investigating.
Welcome to the Forum.

I have 1990 Classic Premium Plus (LPCPP). I think the non reliefed Classic is a beast on its own. Its very shallow neck is combined with a heavy body. I really tried to like vintage pickups in it. Like SD Seth Lover, Antiqities, Bare Knuckle Stormy Mondays and Low wind OX4. It sounded better with heavier pickups.

I echo the Seth Lover recommendations, but I wholeheartedly recommend replacing the pots with 500K audio tapers (even regular-old CTS are fine) and wiring it with the caps connected to the middle lug of the volume pots. The variety of sounds you get from wiring that way is eye-opening. I had a customer play one of mine wired this way the other day and he was amazed by what he could get the guitar to do at various settings of the controls. If you are concerned the bridge pickup might be too bright with a 500K, maybe wait on changing that pot, but you need that clarity in the neck position. The bridge pickup has its own tone control, though, and a large population of us use it. ;)

Start about 2:30 in this video for a tutorial.

Really appreciate everyone's feedback and thoughts. Very helpful to me as I try to figure out what I want to do......or at least try initially. I've done lots of mods on my Fenders over the years - Strats, Teles, Esquires, Jazzmasters, and Jaguars and only about half of my current 20 Fenders are stock. I'm a noob re: Gibsons with HB's tho. It's actually nice to get interested in something a bit different at this point in life.

Drew B - that Joe B YT video was good. Saw him this summer and he really did a great show.

Edit: I'm a little surprised there have been no comments about Gibson 57/57+ Classics. They seem popular in other forums, threads, etc. I have seen in the past.

57 Classics are stupid in every semi-hollow I've ever heard them in, but they're hit-or-miss in Les Pauls, IME.
