Hi all - I haven't been around these parts for quite a while, because I've been away from Les Pauls for a while - mainly playing PRS. After a trip to Nashville over the summer, I've been jonesing again for some Gibson goodness - I was really impressed by what I saw at the Gibson Garage. Was planning to go Goldtop, then on the Gibson page I saw they had new Double Cut Juniors available, and were making my favorite color, TV Yellow. They were out of stock, I was afraid I'd missed the boat, but I signed up for email notifications and got the email the very next day, so I pounced.
First impressions were: gorgeous nitro finish, absolutely beautiful with the grain showing through nicely. The body appears to be 1 piece. Fit and finish is excellent, fretwork is great. Plugged in and the wow factor went even higher. Running through a Plexi model on my HX XL, with an MXR Sugar Drive and a BMF Purple Nurple in front, it's just pure Rock goodness. The tone control has a wide range of usability and it cleans up nicely with the volume. Fretwork is great. Apparently a lot of these have intonation issues, but mine is spot on, with the stock bridge - it's nice that they include the second lightning bolt bridge in the case, but I don't see me needing it.
A week and a half in, and I still can't play any of my other guitars. I tried yesterday and it lasted less than 5 minutes. The playability and tone of the Junior are both outstanding. It's a Southern Rock machine...but also an Alt Rock beast...and a Classic Rock behemoth...you get the idea.
Why has it taken me until now to get a P-90 guitar???
Anyway, since I'm one of those guys that names his guitars, the name Penny came to me quickly, so meet Penny.
