I agree with Joe the moonshine(ceramics)will break the first drop and the second and third one I got wasn't the same. Actually glued my original one back together and it still works on one side. Keep my corricidan bottles at home. I use a copper pipe buffed with 0000 steel wool; have some rubber tubing cut in half glued into the top so it works as a stop. I find the sweet spot on the slide is were my knuckle is and use my middle/pointer fingers to keep the slide pressure even on the strings. Use my pick with middle/ring finger or I palm the pick and use thumb/middle/ring. For me the lighter the touch the better the tone and sustain, also you don't have to raise your action at all. Tried all kinds of slides and settled on the pipe after reading a GP article on slide players, the one that has the guy with 6 fingers on the cover I think...try em all they're cheap, not like amps and guitars!

I've been cutting up the bottom half of a stripped out mic stand for about 26 years now. Sounds great and fits my finger perfectly.

Set a guitar up for slide playing...

You may want to consider setting a guitar for slide playing exclusively with heavier strings...say 13 to 56...ala Lowell George or Bonnie Raitt. The added tension combined allows you to apply a little more pressure to the strings and improves your tone by keeping the slide from getting too whiny...especially with glass.
And if you use open tuning a lot, switching guitars is much easier on all concerned than retuning your guitar.

I've been keeping a strat tuned open with raised action here lately. I'm still diggin' the moonshine slide sound, but I'll be buying a brass slide pretty quick, just to try it. Anybody know who makes the real short brass slides, like on the back cover of John Mooney's "Gone to Hell" CD.
