This song (Smoke Gets In Your Eyes) was made famous by the Platters in the 1950's. I want to say the original version was in Eb. Also, (to me anyway) the whole fun of getting your guitar to "play to it's full potential is working hard to get to that point. Just keep at it and don't give up.
