• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Survey : if the Historics were made in China but half the price - would you buy one ?

No way. Not a fucking chance. You couldn't GIVE me a Chinese guitar. There is no pride in that trash.

Also, I have read the book and know how the economy works.

If it ends up being The Exact Same Guitar other than the country of manufacture, at 1/4 the price I’d still be a YES even if it said Chibson or even Cheap Son on the headstock. I’m not a collector though, just a mediocre (at best!) player.

Americans (and people all over the world, really) need to start recognizing that there are indeed societal costs when we support the economies of dictatorships and autocracies. Yes, there are some things you virtually cannot avoid buying from countries like China...but high end, hand-made guitars are not among them. We're voting with our dollars. I'll buy (and have bought) guitars made in other countries...but not China.

So, I have put myself in the "no" column.

let me go into more detail

If you could purchase a Gibson historic which was the same quality with regards to EVERYTHING - woods / appearance / tone / nitro finish ./ fret work / construction details / case quality / electronics / pick-ups / warranty ....... etc ....

But it was made in China to an extremely high quality by master craftsman - and it said GIBSON on the guitar and it was a real authorized Gibson - but stated China in tiny text in the back of the head stock - at half the price - would you be a buyer ?????

OR would the fact that it was not made in Nashville be an absolute show stopper for you ?

or to take it even doubly further - would you in your mind refuse to even recognize it as being a real Gibson Les Paul ?
Why even bring this up? That’s just dumb. You want cheap prices? Buy a chibson

not dumb at all

I am not talking cheap Chibson quality - I am talking finest quality by a company such as Eastman who have experienced luthiers who make things such as jazz archtops and violins already ....................................snort

Umm half the price is cheap. Are you proposing Gibson moves to china? If that’s the case? American Les Paul’s would be worth significant more while Chinese counterparts would devalue no matter how well made there.

I'm past acquisition and well into appreciation.

I definitely appreciate, admire, and play my Gibson guitars and absolutely do think about the hardworking individuals who build them.

I can relate more to a guitar that was made by an individual who leaves their family every morning and shows up to work to build guitars with pride in knowing their work created the best guitars in the world. The way I show my admiration for them is by owning a guitar made by their hands and heart.

Just playing my Gibson guitars show the people that instantly recognize them that they are great guitars. The standard to be measured against.

Thank you hardworking people at Gibson, you guys are cool.

Never……… The only Non-Gibson I have in my heard, was my synth guitar. I didn’t want to drill holes in a Gibson Les Paul so I bought an Epiphone for that. (This was before Roland came out with a TOM Bridge mount).

Fender is as American as Gibson ..... ask anyone

Nobody is freaking out about Fender making guitars overseas and all the dealers you guys know talk them up and act real prideful when they show them to you.

They act like the country its made in is no big deal at all.,,,,,, and its not like Fender is selling them cheap either.

Go into a guitar center .... look at the guitars young guys are picking up to play or what they are eyeing - it aint Les Paul historics - its Fenders - MEXICAN FENDERS

Rock has been dead for what 30 years now ? ..... what is the biggest rock band to come along since what the band Creed ? ------- NONE ..... there have been no new Led Zeps , A/C D/C , Guns and Roses for decades

younger folks now dont give a shit about playing ZZTOP thru a tweed champ and getting the perfect pearly gates tone .....

what would be so crazy about being able to buy a super high quality guitar -that says GIBSON - not a dopy EPI ,,,,,, for 2800 bucks ?

Grestch does that too ..... they have super nice guitars made overseas and real expensive USA customshop models ...... I am here to tell you those overseas guitars are KILLER for the money ...... I bought one

example ..... you could go to guitar center and get a fine guitar like this for under 3 ..... or if a american made version tickles your fancy - spend 7

(Big AL is mad ..... I think the guy was born mad . ... or he needs a good nap )

Hmmm -
- Dealers trying to make a sale? OK there's rationale for... selling.
- Rock is dead? OK, less popular, so now Gibson has targeted a demographic and...? Do they need to be 'as big or bigger' than Fender using the same strategy and their headstock?
- Epiphone dismissed as... "dopey"...? OK, well, that's dopey.
- Gretsch labels lower-tier line 'Electromatic' They are fine instruments, and yet they are differentiated from their top-tier in a named manner... on the headstock.

Just as:
- PRS does with 'SE'
- Gibson choses to do with Epiphone.

Epiphone:
- A brand identity they shaped and are further resurrecting, offering Epiphone classics in addition to the 'Inspired By Gibson range.
- Casino, Emperor, Riviera, Sheraton, Crestwood, Coronet, Wilshire are Epiphone original designs.

Gibson:
- Differentiation by brand, status, assigning meaning to their intellectual property and use of headstock. Oh, the humanity.

There's been sound rationale as well as gut-level reaction above, so what?

Did you expect unified agreement? If you asked the question to stir a pot, that's now well behind you!

Yet you seem surprised people have taken positions which don't agree with yours... or exhibit disdain in measure to that which they perceive emanating from your posts.

I am just pointing this out, my position has been outlined above, and remains consistent.

It should be very clear by this point; FUCK CHINESE GUITARS.

China has destroyed the economy of the world.

I assume then that you would have been very open to paying 6000 for an American flat screen tv instead of 2000 for one made in China ?

American Iphone ..... nobody would complain if it was 2,000 ?

Modeling amp made in New York for 3 times the price ?

Laptops made in Boston for 3 to 4 times the price ?

My point is your money went much further because you could buy a Chinese microwave for 80 bucks instead of the $ 500 an America one would have cost .

There are a lot of people in America who have crappy jobs - they make very little money - they were able to get things they normally would not have because of China.

No - I am not Chinese ..... but I did just buy a Chinese Yamaha acoustic guitar that is solid rosewood with Edelman spruce top and real ebony for 1/3 the price of a Tayler and it blows them out of the water

Thing is you just don't know with China, you can't trust them. Gibson could have solid terms in a contract with a factory there that specifies the types of materials and lumbers used be of a specific type and quality etc etc and the factory will cut corners behind Gibson's back to cheat Gibson and maximize their own profits. That's just the way they operate over there. If you're running a company, the only time you'd want to outsource manufacturing of your products to China is if you don't care if the quality of your product is garbage and only care that it's made as cheaply as possible.

I'd buy a Japanese made Gibson though if it were made in the same factory that builds Gretsch's, ESP, the higher-end Ibanez stuff etc
