I've been challenged pretty severely and fell short. 3 major, emergency surgery operations in a tough year have left me with a useless, boneless tentacle of a left arm and constant neverending pain. For some reason I was unable to post or view forum threads until new format. I am in a dark place and feel lost. Not as strong as I thought.

I don't know who I am anymore.

Who is this and what have you done with Big Al? You are MUCH stronger than you think and the inspiration you have provided to SOOOOOO many here (and I'm sure elsewhere) is a testament to that. Draw strength from the fact that you have given strength to so many who are returning it a hundred fold in the form of positive thoughts and prayers for you EVERY DAY.

In the meantime, check out Wim Hof... https://www.wimhofmethod.com/free-mini-class... he may look like a weirdo, but I guarantee he is the real deal and his methods are sound. Check with your doctor first, but its basically just breathing. If you can still breathe, you can do it. And it works. Hundreds of thousands of people have used it successfully to overcome all kinds of challenges. SERIOUSLY... check it out!! And in the meantime, stay strong and God bless!!!

Al, I've been around my fair share of hard men all my life....you know the sort...never lost a fight, never been wrong, never been on the back foot, never been scared, never felt bloody useless, always got an answer....etc etc...

To be honest, I shit 'em.

Give me those that bleed...not in public like a pissed up teenager, but those that have got the stones to be honest.

I got lost as a very young man, never did find my way home. With a lot of help, and love, I learnt how to stop fighting the dark, and got acclimatised to that evasive and elusive quality ( to me at least ) of simply accepting it. I found no matter how hard I tried the dark always won, and I was back to square one. I couldn't progress any further alone.

My "mountain guides" have got broken noses, gnarled hands, and gear held together by promises...from use. New boots and a headful of magic is little use to me.

In other words, those that know the ground, know the ground.

Want to know something? "I don't know who I am anymore" - well in my humble, you're someone who knows the ground.

You have absolutely no idea of the lead you gave me in how to narrate my recent hurricane.

It made a significant difference in how I stayed as useful as possible in leading the charge to keep my favourite person on the planet safe.

This reply isn't all cool, windswept, wild and interesting, all talking out of the side of my mouth tough geezer style - perhaps it may have been wiser to say it in private - but it is honest and directed right at you, and saying it aloud and in public is part and parcel of it.

If there is ever a moment you feel that I can be of use, simply ask. It wouldn't be a debt of honour repaid by me, rather an expression of gratitude for the help you don't even know you've given me.

You're my Mate, whether you like it or not.
