Pretty certain they are tortoise pickguards giving the dark effect. Cool that all match.

I would have thought so too, but I've read that they were referred to as "dark" pick guards, and that it was "unusual" for the time. I guess that could mean tortoise shell as well, and it's kind of hard to tell from either the picture or either of the videos. I do love the look of sunburst Strats with tortoise shell pick guards.
