How do they sound? I have a interest in a LP Melody maker, a DC faded Lp, and a flat top LP with the soap bar pickups.

I fixed the link in my post above so that it now points to the soundclip....

I got it for $399 from my local retailer, which is what all of the online places were selling them for at the time. Yeah, the pickguard does dress it up real good...

Damn!

That sounds great. I have a DC Faded LP that does not sound like that (due to ability not the guitar).

...just picked up one today and this thing is gonna make a big " COMEBACK " i presumed.Ordered? ,Actually won an item off E-Bay for a Custom Pickguard and TRC.Will post a peg of before and after also.I heard from a source that they too will be discoed by the end of '05.Dont know if its gonna happen, unless there's a demand for 'em.The TV-Yellow version just stands right out from the other finish ( got lucky with this color also.. ) I though i would be the first one here for this bargain/reissue, but Mr. stratbuster beat me to it.LOL !!!

...stratbuster?? My TV-Yellow one somehow came out a bit GLOSSY for a Satin Finish???,( not complaining at all ) I actually like it though!.Sure is way better than the other Faded/Worn finish from the other models. The finish seems to be more evenly/thickly sprayed. How's your intonation set-up btw??,,,,are you using 10's??,I plug mine througha TRAYNOR YCV80 2x12 tube amp and it tears my buddies LP DC Faded with dual P-90's.This DogEar pups which are all by itself really does justice for being no frills, bare bone single pup growler. It's all i ever neen for this type of model nevermind the retro look/sound/feel.It's a great feeling to be holding out a bit knowing something is bound to show up and hit you between the EARS??? LOL !!!. Was really looking at the LP JuniorSB but got discoed.I was a bit tardy there. But it's allright for this is practically a Junior with a different type of wood and headstock which IMHO gives it a more unique look.Back to the roots there for me.Have you adjusted the polepieces up a bit.Been trying different config on mine since a got it and tape/tracked it for different sonic evaluation. This i can gig without a b/u that's for sure, although i love to have at least two/three along for variety so to speak.A Hummer/Singles and my latest tasty fave? The P-90.I caught a " BUG " on this one, that's for sure.I missed the promo where you buy a Standard and you get th MM of your choice for no price at all FREE???. I guess this is where this thread will begin it's journey huh??:wail

Hey Howdy Trans-Am,
I guess we should take our MM discussions up HERE, before the Moderators move 'em. ;)
Had to reintonate my satin ebony MM when I went to 11's, but didn't have to adjust the neck. TI strings are low tension itseems.
Mine sounds better than a faded DC w P-90's I had. I think one P-90 with the right pots (Gibson did it right, apparently) is the way to go.
I think the MM sounds "airier" than the LP Jr. I'm starting to prefer it...Even to Tele's (or Esquires actually).

-Steve !!! You got any headstock shots of you Ebony/Melody??Matter o'fact yes?? They do sound more " AiRIER " than the DC faded, I a/b'd them side by side when i borrowed my friends Cherry finished DC w/pair P-90.Not saying its better but to my ears it is...Of course!! Its a Melody right?? We gotta stick to 'em and make 'em notice that there is still something they are missing.Besides the LP Jr./Special/DC et 'al?? The LPMM just says it with no frills raw to the bone appeal and the tone?? Well, you gotta hear this beast. For the pricepoint? I'm suprised that it has risen to the top lately.I guess the more they ( Gibson ) hear/read about it? The higher the price will go?.Say?? did you find any flaws or imperfection in the LPMM? or hear about the materials being used.Would you say this model ( LPMM ) which replaced the LP Jr. in '59 got any better?.

Peace!:salude

Sorry Trans-Am, not able to post pics at this time. Give me a couple of weeks.

I love the MM's resonant body shaking. Makes me think the thinner body makes for better sound, at the expense of a somewhat "springy" neck. I've had worse neck flex on other guitars than this one however. It's gig-able.

Good to hear you like the original Gibson P-90.
I have a pretty good ear for the early P-90 sound in the neck position of a Jazz guitar (the Rio Grande "Bastard" does it), but really had no reference for nuances on the newer Gibson P-90's at the bridge.
I had thought about a Rio Grande for my yellow MM, but no longer have that guitar.
Jason Lollar makes some interesting pickups.

Nice job on the pickguard, BTW.
Looks great!

That looks great TA! Glad it worked out for you. I bought a Lollar for my Jr. Only to elect to keep mine stock as well.

I just bought one this weekend. My local music store had a TV yellow, I played it on a lark and fell in love. Took it home, adjusted the truss rod, lowered the action a bit and have been playing it all weekend. What an amazing sounding little guitar.

What is the optimum P-90 height from the strings? This is my first P-90 after many years of guitar playing. I love the variety the tone knob gives. Any tricks or tips?

I've noticed is does hum. How do you guys deal with that - just turn down the volume knob and roll it up for leads? Anyway, this is a wonderful guitar. I think I may have to track down a red one!

I think I might pick one of these up. Especially if I find one for less than $300.

As far as p-90 hum goes, I just turn the volume down between songs. Or just run through an amp that needs a cap job. The hiss almost drowns out the hum.

...most of the hums are minimal, depending where your at with the placing of the amp, positioning the LPMM.Placing anywhere but the lighting type/power sources will minimized the hum.Although it's there?? But hardly noticeable specially when you playing allready.Turning down the vol. is a nice little trick too.

Peace!!:wail
