What could have happened to this neck pickup

Hey everyone,

I'm in the middle of selling my 64 SG Standard. The previous owner told me everything was original, but I noticed some weird soldering spots under the pickup. I’ve checked all the parts, and everything seems original to me, but it looks like the cover might’ve been taken off at some point.

So, I’m wondering, would it be a good idea to take off the cover and see what’s going on under there? Also, are there any signs I can look for to make sure the pickup hasn’t been rewound? I’ve attached some photos, and maybe you can spot some strange things or anything...

That pickup has chrome screw poles, and the pickup ring is a ‘70s M8, so is all post ‘65 at a minimum, and yes it’s had the cover off rather crudely!

Thank you very much! Are chrome screw poles just unusual or is it a characteristic of post 65 pickups? This is what I still don't understand.

It is a characteristc of post '65 Gibson.

Ok, so at some point in time, the original pickup was defect and was replaced by a post 65 pickup. Then, the original pickup cover was reused and soldered on to the post 65 pickup.

Couldn't this still be the original '64 Patent No pickup? It seems to have all of the earliest appointments: Plain enamel wire (purple/ brown colour), L- marks on the base plate feet, double black wires.

If those pole screws are chrome, perhaps someone simply replaced them with chrome ones.

I was thinking the same, but it appears very odd to me that someone changes pole pieces… anyway, I do not even know if they are chrome or not.

The wire color doesn't appear to be puple/brown color but reddish. The wires are one black wire and one white wire per bobine, the screw are chrome plated. All post '65 characteristics.

Yeah, maybe you're right.

That’s a late ‘pre T Top’, with orange poly wire, black/leads and chrome poles, so pushing ‘67 or so, and worth about half of a legit PAF spec ‘64 early PAT, and also they do sound significantly different.
