What guitar stands are safe for Gibson nitro finish?

Fender folding with 'velveteen rubber'. There's just too many things that react with nitro. I've tried a million materials...most often learn the hard way.

The Rockstand (foam) suspiciously started to stick to the nitro topcoat on my Highway One Strat, so I wouldn't trust it on my Gibson. The packaging no longer says anything about being nitro safe.

I use Hercules stands...after checking that the shop selling them was using them for all their high end gear. Thats been a year now and no damage at all.

I never put my guitars away and never had any problems with the Nitro finish on the back of them, with the Hercules stands...

got one myself and it works just fine, but then again Im not all that worried about staining either. My R9 stays in the case when it isn't being played and my R8 was meant to be a work horse.

I have seen the damage that leather straps left on a guitar can do, leather is not nitro's friend.

I see that alot of people say that they have used brand A or brand B without any problems, but why take any chance of not covering them with cotton? I used surgical tubing stands for decades without any problems, then one day it reacted with my Classic and my 52RI Tele out of nowhere. Even your owners manual says to cover your stands with cotton and not to leave leather touching your finish.

huh? safe for a couple of minutes or hours maybe, but leather will damage nitro quicker than the rubber will in some cases!

WHAT ? I've never had any problems (it's been 4 or 5 years and I haven't any problem)

I know you have more experience then me, so I'm inclined to learn more about this. Is there any documentation on this ?

The Highway One is dull but it's not really a satin finish. It doesn't have any flatteners in it so you can buff it out to a regular full gloss (ask me how I know that). I suspect that the heat from buffing it out would've sped up the curing process, and it didn't go into the stand for a few weeks after that, but after maybe a month or two I noticed it stuck like hot thighs on a vinyl bench seat. So I leave a cloth over the foam rails if the guitar is going to sit there for any length of time. Honestly it's a dilemma, I like to leave the guitars out where I can grab whatever flavor I'm in the mood for.

Ive had a Hercules stand for about 2 years now that I keep my Alpine White LPC on most of the time. It is starting to yellow the finish where it hangs by the headstock.....Ok by me as I cant wait till the finish starts to mellow some

Yeah I used a surgical tube stand I bought in 80's with no problems for decades -- perhaps the old surgical tubing was different. Then I bought a hanging stand with black foam on it and it started to disolve the nitro on my Paul and 62RI Tele at the headstock where it hangs.

I lost my Les Pauls owner manual decades ago and I got my 62RI Tele used without a manual.

At home I keep everything cased. I just need a stand for rehearsal and stage

Will look in to the Ultimate and Hercules. Also that wrightway bra looks pretty cool

I'll be careful. I've asked Gibson customer service (I know, please don't start with this...)
and here is the response I got :

Thanks for writing. We don't know of any issues from leather, but we like to recommend all cotton cloth, as we have not tested with leather, so we cannot attest to the effects. Thank you for the inquiry.

I've used a warwick rockstand for years. I haven't noticed any damage to the body, but there is a slight discoloration on the neck binding of my SG supreme where it touches the stand.

Anyone have experience with K&M stands? I have been using one of their heli stands for my Les Paul and ES-335 for a couple of years, after seeing this stand used at Buffalo Brothers in San Diego. I also just bought the acoustic version of the heli stand for my Gibson acoustic.

The stands have hard rubber on them. I have not noticed any problems yet, but this thread has gotten me concerned.

Once again, everyone needs to stop worrying about what stand they are using and just cover all contact points with soft cotton. The black neoprene is pretty safe, but it can discolor (as we have all seen at GC), but why take any chance at all?

Old thread but I want to add that String Swing marked my 2021 Classic in three days. To bad too, I was hopeful based on many comments here. Time to wrap it in cotton. Good thing I didn’t use the R8 as the guinea pig.

The leather on the end of a Couch guitar strap burned a perfect imprint onto the back 335 satin thin finish... now I call them Ouch straps.
