What is the cream colored material used as the base on late ‘50s Epi “NY” pickups?

I always figured it was plastic. But look at this photo. It almost looks like bone. Could it actually be ivory??

Maybe catalin? I've seen a big range of white to yellow color in the Epis I've had with NY pickups which is typical of catalin. Same stuff that the early switch tips were made of. I've had a few of the bases break in shipping and catalin is kind of brittle. Ivoroid doesn't seem to turn yellow or at least not to the extent that I've seen in NY pickups.
