I’m on vacation with my family and got to meet up with a fellow forum member and burst owner. He was kind enough to bring over his burst, which is an original 1959 with original double white PAFs. I got to spend the afternoon with it and it was absolutely spectacular. Unplugged, it resonated like nothing else. Plugged into a nice tube amp, it was absolutely glorious. I’m at a loss for words, as playing one has been on my bucket list for decades. This one is relatively lightweight and just sings like nothing else I’ve played. This is definitely one of the good ones! Here are a few photos…

Good for you! I played one back in the 70s. Can't remember what it sounded like, but I remember being impressed! Prune music guitar show, Mill Valley

My little '59 burst story. Back in 1978 I was playing bass in a newly formed band. One of our guitar players used a 1970 LP and he told me he also owned a '59 LP but he didn't want to use it in the clubs. I asked him what all the fuss was about '59 LP's and he said I'll bring it to practice tomorrow.

He started off with his '70 LP straight into his '59 Bassman amp. (Guitar, cord and amp man!) Sounded great! Then he plugged the '59 LP in. One word to describe the tonal difference between the two: bigger. Like from 8 to 9.5. What I remember most was how the higher notes seemed to hit you in the chest. Fantastic articulation as well.

I was like "okay, now I get it!"

When I see Eric in November, I'll have to ask him how it got the name
Guitar 9 0919. "The Toilet Seat" Burst!

I've come back more than once to look at this Burst. It's perfect in every way. I bet that guitar screams when cranked up. I love that guitar. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks! It's just my opinion, but it's a great sounding guitar and the neck pickup on this thing just kills.

I just spoke to Eric, and this was his answer...
"It was just a sarcastic and whimsical name that Kevin (The owner since about 1986)
had given the guitar. No real meaning behind it"

I guess he just kind of threw it out there, and as those things do...it stuck.

Well, sort of, LOL! I am Kevin and Eric (a longtime friend) was close on the year, actually it was '83. I started referring to it as the Toilet Seat a few years after I bought it. One of my buddies was playing it and he just kept going on and on about how great it was and how different it was from everything else that he had ever had the opportunity to play, etc. Finally I just told him that I appreciated the fact that he was so taken with it "...but that at the end of the day it's just a f#$&ing toilet seat with six strings on it...". So I just started using that phrase to describe it when I was asked about it.
Yes, it's sarcastic especially considering all of the pomp and circumstance that is associated with these guitars, so I'm just really poking fun at all of that. Don't get me wrong, I fully appreciate all that this guitar is and has been to me. Especially when I play something "similar" and then play the TS it reminds me of just how fortunate that I have been in certain regards.
Something else that I tell folks who are curious about it is that in the end it's just a guitar, but it's a hell of a guitar.

Yours is an awesome looking guitar. Maybe I can play it one day….interested in a weekend trip to Nashville to visit Eric and me? 😝

We will sneak you out…no problem. Eric has a nice place near all the action. Lots to go and see within walking distance
