• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Haha, I love a sense of humour. I hope this starts a slagging match!

I'll start... nothing personal but i'm done with Weber speakers. I've written several times how much i love the sound and I do but no sooner than I wrote did they faii. The first two I though were just bad luck, the last one convinced me otherwise. As fate would have it I recently (within past two weeks) happened to be speaking with one of the larger boutique builders and he told me he had to stop using Webers because of high failure ratio and poor quality control. Just my experience and opinion, YMMV, but I'm done.

I'd expect that from a middleschooler... Adult owner of a company... not so much.

What type of speaker did you get from them?

I've had two 12F150T's fail and one 10F150T. One in a BF Princeton and two in a BF Deluxe. I also bought a quad of weber michigans that one went out for no apparent reason about 6-7 years ago. The speakers are not blowing. They have all developed buzzing and rubbing problems and sound terrible. It's a shame because these were wonderful sounding speakers but seems quality control is a problem. I heard exactly the same report from a very reliable source that buys speakers by the hundred and experienced similar failures.

I would think it's something I'm doing but every time it happens I put one of my old pre-rolas in and they work fine for months. In the past 5 years i've had vintage Jensen ceramics and various Celestions in the amp and only the webers have failed in my BF Deluxe. The webers have also all failed in less than 3-4 months. again, they are not blowing... I don't know if the glue is cheap or done poorly but seems the alignment is just not holding up under regular use. I do gig more heavily than most, my amp stays in its road case in a large equipment truck but have not had this problem with any other speaker.

Thanks for that run down j45. It's of interest to me as I've recently bought 2xBlue Dog and 2xSilver Bell alnicos from them so I'll see how they last.
As they say bad news travels fast.........an amp repair buddy of mine here told me about the problems the webers were having when I mentioned my purchase.

That's bad news ... I use Webers almost exclusively in my builds because I have not found anything that sounds at least equal to them ... well, I have to admit, that I liked the tone tuby in a friend's amp but they cost a lot more. I never had a single problem tho ... they get played hard for many hours and none of them has failed yet. I guess I will continue to use them until my own experience changes.

I ordered a C1225 with pre-Rola doping ( whatever that is???) about 6 months ago and installed it in my 18watter, wonderful speaker, by far the best "greenback" I've ever used. I hope it'll hold up.
Would be a shame but not the first time a good company is run into the ground when the leadership changes. And that comic strip is just pathetic:wow

I still don't know the story about leadership changes of what the other stories are about, I'm just bummed out that I've lost some great sounding speakers. The 12F150 has been by far my favorite speaker in my work amp. Even after losing two of these from what appears to be quality control issues I'm tempted to go back again. I really loved the sound. I think it's obvious that more Webers seem to hold out rather than fail so maybe I just had bad luck? If i buy another I feel like I'd be like the person in an abusive relationship that keeps going back for more punishment, though. or...maybe I'll get lucky the next time?

I wonder when these quality issues started. I haven't bought a Weber speaker in a year or so ...

FWIW, I've had two Celestions (made in China) develop voice coil rubbing, one was one of mine, one in a customer's cab. I don't buy speakers in the hundreds, so I was surprised that two had this problem.

I find it downright asinine.

I have to agree. I'll be sourcing my low-end speakers from WGS, not Weber. Jim's new speakers are amazing, and, I think, closer to what he wanted all along. The new ones have Thiele-Small specs closer to Celestions.

That said, I have some old Weber/Scumbacks, and there's nothing wrong with them. I still like them. But all the Weber speakers I've tried seem a bit dark. YMMV.

Yes, they are more of the fat side than on the cutting side. I love that but it sure isn't everybody's cup of tea ... and it depends in what kind of amp you are using them.

I love Weber ceramics with EL 84 amps. Those amps have so much upper range.
