• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Hey guys, another step closer. The Tail Piece Studs are in.

This from Florian.....

" I'm carefully re-drilling the tail piece hole on the high-e side. Then I drill the small hole for the ground wire (you shouldn't forget that!). I even hit the old hole so the new ground wire came out in the big cavity through the same old hole Gibson drilled! Then I hammered the handmade iron inserts in.

On the last picture you can see that the tail is not parallel to the ABR-1, but slanted towards the centre seam's right angle and on the high-e side closer to the ABR-1 than before. "

What was the point of plugging and redrilling the tailpiece hole? I missed that part.

Yeah, I like that. It's a nice little touch. I also think it's going to contribute to helping solve my original problem.

Sorry ADP I missed your post in the middle there. Yeah, like Gary said. Florian showed me some pictures of an original next to a Historic and you can see the Historic Tail Piece is square to the centre seam where as the 50's guitar is slightly off set with the treble side ever so slightly closer to the ABR-1.

Alot of the reason I chose to have it done was because of the dead spot thing. To my mind I think it would have an effect on the way the guitar resonates and I was looking to change that from the way it was in any way possible.

Also I just like it. It's like the logo, one of those quirky things that I find pleasing to the eye.

Oh yeah, and on the finish as was said before I totally agree, lightly aged just to open up the tone. Finish checking and a few light bumps here and there. Nothing too drastic. Keep it natural and I'll do the rest...

Very nice! We have the logo for comparison. I think that's going to look great.

" This the mid-fifties repro logo I placed directly next to the original 1954 Les Paul I currently have in my workshop because I restored it.
It's an awesome sounding guitar you gasp when you play a couple of chords or licks.

On the 2nd pic I placed the logo right on that original one, it's pretty close even if it's not 100% the same. The original MOP-logos were meticulously hand-sawn I guess we're very confident with this one. "

Weird how those 54 tulip buttons have turned so orangey brown. Never seen that kind of discoloration on buttons pre 58. Wonder if they are some kind of reproduction or something.

Funny, I was looking at that too and thinking I'm eventually going to have to track down some discoloured Turner's at some point.

So your saying the pre 58 tuners didn't discolour? I wonder what the difference in the material was?

Ah, that's great info. Cheers.

I was thinking it looked pretty cool on the 54, but sounds like that wouldn't be correct for a 56.

The pre-58 tulip buttons don't really shrink and discolor very little. Exact opposite of the white bean buttons that can shrink pre 58, but generally stay nice during burst years.

Man I wouldn't know for sure. I would have thought if they were original the shafts might be a little more bent here and there.

Maybe we take a poll and I'll ask him again.

I'd guess if they are repro's they'd probably be Crazy Parts but still they could very well be original. The plot thickens...
