Maybe it's just the photo but does that headstock look a little off for a Burst-era LP neck?

He used the '59 LP at the same time however Beano heralded the LP/Marshall sound so folks reacted to that more so than Mike with the Butterfield band I think.
He was a great player and the band toured England in late '66, don't know if he used his LP during the tour but did see a pic of him using his '54 GT.
I believe that Michael was happy with the goldtop until they tour Europe and saw/heard the top plays with burst. In the book he started pestering Erlewine to trade for his burst.

It's interesting to me that players went with 'bursts' rather than sticking with P90s, to me the sound is less dynamic overall(neck and middle positions) with humbuckers.

Thanks for your insightful post. I can't imagine what it must feel like now, to have been right in the middle of important music history. But at the time you guys weren't aware of that o.c. :)✌️
I saw Mayalls band on his 70th birthday tour. His guitarist was Buddy Whittington, and he was absolutely incredible, in my mind better than Eric ever was. The support band was the splinter group, which included Peter Green....

So there were TWO sunburst Les Pauls in the great man's hands in that era....

Following this thread has got me thinking about the groundwork of so many great players in that era. Mick Taylor, Jeff Beck and Peter Green were just three who took that sound we treasure so much and really went to town. I still find myself digging up Taylor videos and marveling slack-jawed. This interview with Andy Summers goes far in explaining the musical richness of that era. I well recall how jazz musicians were deemed to be on some higher level; they demanded respect and got it.
You can cut to the 3:30 mark and get the Les Paul stories, but it might be worth it hearing his club stories, too. Because that extraordinarily rich music emerged in clubs.

1st pic is the well known pic from the back of the Beano album. 2nd pic is one I bought from a printer in England dated 1966, Eric appears to be wearing the same clothes and judging from his appearance, from the Beano session. The 3rd pic is a close up of the stain on the LP Is the LP in the second picture the Beano or a different one? Or is it the guitar that he bought from Andy Summers. I don't remember reading that the beano guitar had a stain by the bridge?

It's Beano. The Summersburst looks different in many ways, there are colour pics of it in the forum archives and elsewhere.

If it was moderately/heavily flamed, would it show in those grainy photos? Now that I think about it, who took the photos? Does that person still have the negatives?
