• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I liked what Clapton was playing, only problem was that he was playing it with the wrong band. Like some others, I agree what he played didn't fit into the context of what they were playing.

But...given a choice between being a virtuoso on the instrument like Marsalis or having the passion in me to write a song like Layla, I'd pick the latter.

I agree with Litcrit's point that there's a long tradition of great artists being assholes as people. The thing about Wynton, however, is that he carries himself with all of the assholism typically associated with a great artist, but without ever actually having been one. This, I think, elevates his assholism into a whole new realm. Therefore, I singled him out. Sorry to have irked you.
.

Yes I agree he was very full of himself right out of the box, and his impeccable jazz AND classical chops wowed the world...he never emotionally "moved" me either, although he is a monster player. I do appreciate his role in bringing jazz more into the mainstream and trying to keep the music alive with his educational endeavors, etc...

It's funny too because I never get that 'academic' vibe with either Branford, or the dad, Ellis who taught them all, plus Harry Connick.

I like Branford a lot for several reasons, not all related to his abilities as a player, here are my top two:
1) you could really tell that he just wasn't cut out for the Jay Leno gig, he tried hard but in the end it wasn't him and he wasn't enough of a fake to hide it. I watched the tonight show just to see how he'd cope with the BS.
2) he doesn't use wedges/ floor monitors. That's a biggie in my book, man, I hate those things blasting at me, I always unplug them or turn them face down, no matter how big the stage. Branford made the audio crew move those things offstage whenever I saw him and preferred to just hear his horn the normal way.

Thanks for sharing the initial clip. It was amazing. I don't care for a lot of Claptons stuff. But anything that can get that dam Strat out of his hands is a blessing. I think he is twice as good on a Gibson humbucker guitar. I sure hope he goes back to it as his main guitar one day.

I hear ya straightblues, but.... I've heard him play very very good stuff on the Strat too. And then, sad to say, the tone of the Strat went out the window. Now when he plays the 335, the tone is still missing/ WTF? It's not the guitar. It's his approach.
As I said earlier, he could have the best tone on the planet, but just "fizzes" it out. On the Wynton/Clapton video, I see a huge Tweed amp on the side of the bandstand. CLapton's??

In this setting, a Princeton Reverb turned up to 8 would have delivered so much tone and feel, especially with that 335. But no, a Tweed Twin??

Can't say what is going on there, but I don't hear any heavenly Clapton tone. Just wimpy.

Friends went to hear Clapton with the Cream re-union, paid big bucks to re-live the experience, and were so disappointed, mad!!! "His tone sucked" was part of the trashing.
"Ditch the Strat" if you're gonna play Cream music!!!!!!!
What's with him? I guess he just doesn't care.

I just want to hear this Eric come out to play every once in a while.

He sure put his all into that cut!..lots of disagreement about the time frame for that tune, if you read the posts..
Sounds to me like the original un-modded strats he used to use (Blackie?)

Now Damnit, that's what I'm talkin' about!!! What a heavenly tone! And the phrasing, the passion. He just won't let go of some of those notes. The best.
