• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Not many know this.

It can now be revealed...although our Clappers supposedly plays mostly Strats, since 1971 he has recorded all his solos with the super-secret Gibson Yeti Signature model (show below):

The ES-5 is one of my bucket list guitars. So, according to TW, I should never buy one.

Best Strat I have sonically of the 15 vintage Stratocasters I own is a beat to hell 55 Hardtail :dude:
I don't use the tremolo so I'm good without the bar.

PS Charlie thanks for selling me the 65 back. Dad always asks about that guitar.

I reckon it was back in '94 that I saw Robert Cray @UM in Missoula. He was using 2 Matchless Combos back then, Chieftains I think. To me his sound is THE hardtail strat sound.

Wang bar? He don't need no stinkin' wang bar. Not with a monster vibrato like this!!

Have mercy Mr. Cray can play that 'thang!

I love Robert's playing, lisp and all but his singing is what really gets me.

RC has lisp????

Never heard it.

Dude has a killer voice.

The "lisp" is an old reference to the in-between sounds (neck/middle and bridge/middle) of a Strat.
I think Lawrence Welk's old guitarplayer (Buddy Merrill) coined that phrase.
Yeah, Robert's singing makes me forget that he's also a killer guitar player, one of the best of his generation. To my ears he sounded better with BF Super Reverbs than with those Matchless but that's a minor thing.

I always thought that was "quack". Never heard lisp. I love the positions 2 and 4 on mine. Give me the evens.

I dunno, I always thought "quack" was a reference to piezo acoustic guitar PU's. I think the in-between sounds were discoverd within minutes after the first stratocaster was assembled but Leo must have not liked it.
I'm just waiting for someone to claim that a 5-way switch in position 2 or 4 doesn't sound as good as forcing an original 50's 3way switch into the in-between position since we all know that vintage switches sound better than new ones:##

BTW, what do you all think of the "all 3 PU on" or "neck and bridge" positions that those mini switch mods made possible? I've seen a ton of strats that at some points had 3 mini-toggles installed.
I like the neck and bridge only on a strat but all 3 sounds pretty weird.

I did the mini-toggle mod way back in the day. So far back that I only had one electric guitar! I've always liked the neck + bridge sound and was glad to have it available on my guitar. In truth, it was just okay. A tele will sound better for that sound, IMO.

The all-three sound was kind of useful to me for chugging chords, just because it was thin enough to cut through but full enough to not dominate. I didn't use it real often. In retrospect, I can see that having individual vol pots for each pickup (like your ES-5 has) would have unearthed a few interesting shades of semi-phasedness. But I traded that guitar away and went through an "anything-but-a-strat!" phase.

1,000,000 different shades of sound but no way to reliably dial them in on the fly.

Most guys that have hardtails Strats also have trem models. :ganz

Thank you TW! I literally just bought a killer 1951 ES-5 this afternoon in sunburst. It sounds great but nothing like a Strat. Oh by the way I bought a mint 1963 Strat as well with a tremolo. All good either way. :dude:
