Pre 1965: Now that's a PROPER vintage guitar.
But then the Martin crowd shows up and laughs at "pre 1965".
...who are then made fun of by the violin people... (Ha! Pre 18th century for us - and it's gotta be made in Cremona, Italy!)

1960 and before for me.

I know the Late Sixties are held in high regard, but a guy in a local band bought one (new) and it didn't come close to the '57 our lead player used.

Mid-Sixties, as there is an imperative to include LP/SGs, Firebirds, and more esoteric ES: Trini Lopez, Barney Kessel, and Tal Farlow models.

I was led to believe vintage was anything over 40 yrs old
In around 20yrs time a 1959 Les Paul for instance will no longer be 'Vintage' but move into the 'antique' category .

The words "vintage", "classic" and "antique" mean different things in different markets, and in different countries. People in England are not impressed by a (merely) 100 year old chair.

When I was a kid, a Model T was "antique" and a 1940 Ford was "vintage". Second hand Les Pauls were just "used". :)
